The New York Knicks tried to make an early trade splash in the 2024 offseason, with NBC Sports Chicago Bulls insider K.C. Johnson saying that some in the league hinted that the Knickerbockers had a target on the back of guard Alex Caruso.
The Bulls targeted Giddey just as specifically as the Oklahoma City Thunder eyed Alex Caruso in the one-for-one trade finalized on Friday. League sources indicated that the New York Knicks and Sacramento Kings both offered draft capital to the Bulls in packages they felt were superior to the one-for-one deal.
New York Knicks’ failed Alex Caruso plan happened before wild Mikal Bridges trade

It was not indicated in Johnson’s piece what package the Knicks were looking to cough up for Caruso, but the former Texas A&M Aggies star would have been an intriguing addition to New York. Caruso’s best asset is his defense, as he just earned an NBA All-Defensive First Team nod in the 2023-24 season, while the Knicks already have a stout defense with just 108.7 points allowed per game last season – good for fifth overall in the league.
Caruso is now with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the Knicks have found an even better two-way player after successfully trading for Brooklyn Nets star and former Villanova Wildcats standout Mikal Bridges.

At the moment, the Knicks’ backcourt features the likes of Jalen Brunson, Donte DiVincenzo, Miles McBride, Bridges, and Alec Burks, with Burks probably gone soon via free agency.
