Former Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw reflected on the recruitment of basketball star Caitlin Clark, revealing the complexities behind her eventual decision to commit to Iowa instead. Despite initially expressing interest in the Fighting Irish, Clark’s choice highlighted her desire to stay close to home and pursue her collegiate career with the Hawkeyes.

Clark made headlines not only for her impressive skills on the court but also for her thoughtful approach during her college recruitment. Initially, she had verbally committed to play for Notre Dame, a prestigious program with a rich history. However, as time went on, it became evident that her heart was set on playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes, her home-state team. This decision showcased her character and the importance she placed on familial ties and personal instincts.

McGraw recounted the recruitment journey, describing Clark’s commitment as somewhat tentative from the beginning. McGraw sensed hesitation in Clark’s voice when she initially expressed her desire to join the Fighting Irish. Despite giving a verbal agreement, Clark ultimately felt a stronger connection to Iowa, leading her to make the difficult decision to de-commit. This pivotal moment illustrated not only Clark’s self-awareness but also her respect for the coaching staff at Notre Dame.

In a heartfelt phone call, Clark informed McGraw of her decision before going public. This act of consideration revealed her integrity and highlighted her genuine nature. McGraw reflected on this moment, acknowledging how Clark’s choice impacted her own coaching career. It became clear that Clark was not just a talented athlete but also a person of strong character, willing to make tough choices while honoring her commitments.

McGraw recently shared how Notre Dame’s failed bid to recruit Clark years ago went. This can be seen in an article written by Ben Crawford for The Mirror.

“I may still be coaching if Caitlin Clark came to Notre Dame,” revealed former Fighting Irish coach Muffet McGraw on the Good Game With Sarah Spain podcast.

“She committed to us, but I had a feeling it was kind of a soft commitment when she did because she couldn’t decide, could not decide. And then finally she said, ‘I want to come.’ But it wasn’t like, ‘I’m coming! ‘ It was kind of like, ‘I made the decision.'”

Yet, as Clark’s allegiances switched, she made sure to let McGraw know via phone call before her public announcement, highlighting her truly well-natured character, reports the Irish Star.

As Clark transitioned to the Hawkeyes, she flourished, shattering records and leading her team to national prominence. Her decision to prioritize her instincts and stay close to home proved beneficial, allowing her to develop into a formidable player. Ultimately, she became the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft, reinforcing the idea that her choice was indeed the right one.

Clark’s recruitment saga exemplified the intersection of talent, character, and personal values. By choosing Iowa over Notre Dame, she not only honored her roots but also paved the way for a remarkable career. Her journey serves as an inspiring reminder of the importance of following one’s instincts in the pursuit of success.
