The Phoenix Mercury got some good news on the Brittney Griner front, as the star center finally had her first practice with the team since suffering a foot injury just before the start of the 2024 WNBA season.

Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts also spoke with reporters on Thursday and gave a promising update on the status of the eight-time All-Star.

“It’s been a return to play the last week to 10 days, so we’ll see how she responds today,” said Tibbetts (h/t Justin LaCertosa of Burn City Sports).  “Like I said, this was her first practice. Hopefully we’re seeing her back in uniform soon.”

Griner was in line to be with the Mercury at the start of the season but a toe fracture derailed her and the team’s plans. Despite her absence, Phoenix had a great start to the campaign, going 3-1 through their initial four games. However, wins have been hard to come by for Phoenix since.

The Mercury could use the help of Griner, as they have been struggling to score wins of late. They have lost five of their last six games, a stretch that also saw them lose five games in a row.

As of Thursday, the Mercury are just 4-6 on the season.

Coming up next for Phoenix is a showdown on Friday at home against the visiting Minnesota Lynx, who beat the Mercury on May 31 in the Twin Cities to the tine of a 95-71 score.
