Indiana Fever rookie star Caitlin Clark was named TIME Magazine’s 2024 Athlete of The Year, but the recognition came with some backlash, particularly over Clark’s statement about “white privilege” and her comment about black women in the NBA. The comment did not sit well with some people, like political analyst Josh Holmes.
During one of the recent episodes of the Ruthless Podcast, co-host Josh Holmes offered his honest opinion on Caitlin Clark “going woke,” particularly with the latter’s statement about her “white privilege” and how she placed the black women of the WNBA on a higher pedestal and gave a statement on “elevating” them.
As Holmes put it, the previous generation came from a time that did not make a big deal out of “white buckets or black buckets,” even citing how shows back then led by black actors were never called “that black show,” but rather by its titles.
“One of the big pieces of that in my view is that we all kind of grew up in a social atmosphere where you just didn’t think of people in white buckets and black buckets,” he said. It’s not how we grew up and somehow time over the last 10 years all of that changed and it took people a while to try to figure out how and why and what they could do about it.
Caitlin Clark’s Statment Proved Sports Agents “Didn’t Get The Memo”
If there is one thing that Caitlin Clark’s “woke” statement proved, Josh Holmes believes that it’s about the sports industry not being updated as they “did not get the memo” about how people feel about DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) statements.
“In this election they finally said f*** you we are not doing this anymore, we are not going to discriminate people, we are not going to evaluate their character or their worth based on their skin color—we’re not doing any of that anymore,” Holmes said. “DEI and all of those people that want to push that agenda are doing that to us, we’re going to throw your asses out and that’s exactly what they did.”
“So now you get the sports agents and all this stuff that apparently didn’t get the memo,” he said.
For her rookie year, Caitlin Clark was included in the All-Star WNBA First Team, became a WNBA All-Star, and was hailed the Rookie of The Year for the 2024 season. She also set multiple records like the most assists in a single season, most points by a point guard in a season, and the first rookie to achieve a triple-double in WNBA history.
