Sabrina Ionescu is getting ready to take on a much more difficult challenge in this upcoming WNBA season as she and the New York Liberty defend their position as winners from last year. In the previous WNBA season, Ionescu’s New York Liberty played against the Minnesota Lynx in the finals of the tournament and won their first-ever championship.

Last year, the WNBA got a sweet influx of high-performers like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Cameron Brink, etc. who provided an extra oomph for the tournament. In this upcoming season which will kick off in May, the WNBA tournament will see numerous players shuffled to different teams, with many new faces appearing on the court. Paige Bueckers from the UConn Huskies and Kiki Iriafen from USC are expected to make their debuts this season.

“I would say probably the hardest thing to have to do is win your first one: that pressure of not having done it yet and then finally doing it. But I would say defending one is probably just as hard. Everyone understands that you won the year before and you have to be better than you were that last year,” Sabrina Ionescu said about the mounting pressure for the New York Liberty in the upcoming season.

Sabrina Ionescu has been playing in the WNBA since 2020 after she was selected by the New York Liberty as the first overall pick in the very first round of the draft. Before that, Ionescu played college basketball for the Oregon Ducks from 2016 to 2020. During this offseason, Ionescu has been busy playing for the Phantom basketball club in the inaugural season of the Unrivaled League.

Sabrina Ionescu’s College Team, Oregon Ducks, To Meet Vanderbilt In First NCAA Round

On another note, Sabrina Ionescu’s college basketball team, the Oregon Ducks are scheduled to take on the Vanderbilt Commodores in the first round of the NCAA Tournament this weekend. While Oregon finished tenth in the Big Ten with a 10-8 conference score, and 19-11 overall, Vanderbilt finished ninth in the Southeastern table with an 8-8 conference score and 22-10 overall.

The Oregon Ducks last played against the Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten tournament and lost the game, 78-62. In that matchup, Peyton Scott led the Ducks on the scoreboard with 16 points, grabbing eight rebounds and assisting four times, while Ehis Etute added another 14 impressive points, with four boards and a pair of helpers.
