“They Forget About Him” – Former San Antonio Spurs Big Man Speaks on Devin Vassell Getting Overlooked

The San Antonio Spurs‘ best player is center Victor Wembanyama. This is why most fans watch their games — to see how great Wemby is. However, other players contribute to their success. One of the players who gets overlooked by fans and experts is Devin Vassell. Before the arrival of the French star, Vassell was arguably the go-to scorer of the team.

However, since the one-time All-Star was drafted by the team in 2023, Vassell has decreased his production. He’s also been overlooked in the Spurs’ offense. Most of it has something to do with Wemby’s arrival, but his injuries have also contributed to his declining production.

Even former Spurs big man Matt Bonner knows that Vassell gets overlooked in the team’s system. He talked about the 6-foot-5 guard and how he needs to play well. According to him, San Antonio could have a great season ahead with his contributions.

“One of my big keys to the Spurs’ success? Devin Vassell,” the two-time NBA champion said on “SiriusXM NBA Radio”.

“I think he’s underrated, he’s sneaky, super athletic on both ends of the floor. You just got to stay healthy, stay on the floor. When people look at their roster, they forget about him and like he’s a really good player. He gives them a really good third scoring option that can go off and be that X-factor when they need it.”

Last season, Vassell appeared in 64 games, averaging 16.3 points, four rebounds and 2.9 assists on 44.3% shooting from the field. It was a clear decline in production since he averaged close to 20 points the season before. But the young guard needs to have a productive season for the San Antonio Spurs.

Wembanyama did not finish his sophomore season the way he wished. Due to blood clots on his right shoulder, the San Antonio Spurs star had to be shut down by the team for the rest of the season.

It has been months since Wemby’s health scare, and he has recovered from it. Accoridng to NBA insider Marc Stein, he saw the big man play basketball in Los Angeles. Stein was impressed with what he saw, which indicated positive signs.

“Wemby, of course, hasn’t played in game conditions since February, when his All-Star sophomore season in San Antonio came to an abrupt end due to a blood clot,” Stein wrote. “Yet I’m told he played in some recent fullcourt runs at Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles and, just so you know, is said to have looked quite stellar.”

Fans are looking forward to seeing Wemby back on the floor for the Spurs.
