Throughout last season, San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama didn’t get to play at 100 percent due to the lack of a talented point guard. In a perfect world, though, the front office can get one-time All-Star Dejounte Murray from the Atlanta Hawks to give Wemby the floor general he needs.
The highly anticipated European prospect, generated immense buzz both in Europe and during his matches against the G League Ignite before entering the NBA. His unique blend of height, ball-handling skills, outside shooting, exceptional defense, and a high basketball IQ captivated audiences. The San Antonio Spurs recognized his potential and made a sound decision by selecting him as the first overall pick in the previous year’s draft.
While Wembanyama’s first few games had a slower start, he quickly gained momentum and never looked back. In a span of 71 games, the young star emerged as the franchise player for the Spurs, delivering impressive performances. He averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.2 steals, and 3.6 blocks per game. He showcased his versatility by shooting 46 percent from the field, 32 percent from beyond the arc, and nearly 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Wemby’s impact on the court has been nothing short of extraordinary, solidifying his status as one of the league’s most promising young talents. As he continues to develop his skills and contribute to the Spurs’ success, fans eagerly anticipate witnessing the further growth and achievements of this remarkable player in the seasons to come.
San Antonio Spurs Acquire Dejounte Murray To Create Potent Backcourt For Victor Wembanyama
The lack of a talented facilitator prevented the Spurs rookie from performing better on the court. Greg Swartz explains in his article for Bleacher Report why Atlanta Hawks’ Dejounte Murray is the ideal target for San Antonio this offseason.
“It’s obvious that Dejounte Murray and San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich still share a deep bond from their time together. With the Spurs in need of a point guard, Murray would be the perfect player and leader to return to San Antonio to help mentor Victor Wembanyama and get the team back to the playoffs. Murray was an All-Star the last time he played for the Spurs in 2021-22, leading the NBA with 2.0 steals and registering a career-high 9.2 assists,” Swartz wrote.
This season, Murray posted the best numbers of his career. Over the course of 78 regular season games, the guard averaged 22.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per contest.
It remains to be seen which point guard will San Antonio pursue in the offseason. If ever they go for Murray, they’ll be creating a deadly duo with Wembanyama, one that can dominate the league in years to come.
