It has been a while since the last time the San Antonio Spurs were a relevant team in the NBA. That being said, there are big expectations for the Spurs, with Victor Wembanyama in the fold.

Wembanyama showed incredible promise in his rookie NBA season. He showed everyone he was worth all the hype during his first season in Spurs uniform, capturing the 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year award and coming so close to winning the 2024 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, finishing just behind fellow French star Rudy Gobert of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the voting.

Despite losing out on the DPOY award, Wembanyama still has a tremendous career upside. Chicago Bulls point guard Lonzo Ball even said that Wemby could become the best player ever.

“He has a chance to be the best player ever, potentially. I’ll say that right now,” Ball said on his podcast, What an Experience.

The Spurs went only 44-120 in the last two seasons, but they should be able to turn the corner sooner than later, with Wembanyama as the franchise’s cornerstone. Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 3.6 blocks per game in the 2023-24 NBA season.

There’s still plenty of work to do for Wembanyama, including his efficiency on offense, as he posted just a 51.9 effective field goal percentage this season, but he should be better as he gets more experience in the league.

Ball could finally get the chance to share the floor with Wembanyama in the 2024-25 NBA season, as he is expected to return to action next season amid a knee injury that has caused his lengthy absence.
