NBA insider Anthony Irwin recently reported that the San Antonio Spurs are monitoring Austin Reaves’ situation with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Reaves is expected to decline his $14.9 million player option next summer to test the waters of free agency. He could leave the Los Angeles Lakers in search of a higher payday, and the San Antonio Spurs could offer him such.

“In all likelihood, Reaves will turn down his player option after this season and could command a contract in the ballpark of $30 to $35 million per year,” Irwin wrote.

“If/when Reaves opts out of his current contract, he’ll be an unrestricted free agent with plenty of interest. League sources say the San Antonio Spurs and other teams are keeping a close eye on Reaves’ free agency,” he added.

San Antonio Spurs News: Stephon Castle opens up on the team’s guard logjam

As things stand, the San Antonio Spurs have a crowded backcourt (especially if they manage to acquire Austin Reaves), as they have De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Dylan Harper, Devin Vassell, and Jordan McLaughlin. According to Castle, this provides him with an opportunity to improve.

“Being able to surround yourself with great guards that are super high-level, especially at the ages we’re at… We’re going to be playing with each other for a long time,” Castle told Matt Guzman of SI.

“It’s definitely a great feeling to know that we’re going to be able to share that position and learn from each other,” he added.
