As the San Antonio Spurs continue to build their team, one of their roster needs is a veteran backup center who could mentor and back up their star, Victor Wembanyama, since they only have Zach Collins, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Charles Bassey as his backups.
According to Matt Moore of The Action Network, the San Antonio Spurs have expressed interest in acquiring Brook Lopez, as he is approaching the final year of his current deal with the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2024-25 season.
“The Bucks aren’t being secretive about their designs on reshaping the roster, with Doc Rivers believing the core that contended between 2021 and 2024 needs a shake-up,” Moore wrote. “Brook Lopez is most consistently the name brought up as involved in discussions, with San Antonio among the interested teams.”
Brook Lopez is coming off a decent 2023-24 campaign with the Milwaukee Bucks, averaging 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 2.4 blocks per game while shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 36.6 percent from three-point range in 79 regular-season games.
In the postseason, the “Splash Mountain” averaged 17.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.3 blocks per game on 58.7 shooting from the field and 43.5 percent from three-point range.
How will Brook Lopez fit in the San Antonio Spurs?
Brook Lopez has been a key cog for the Milwaukee Bucks, as he helped them win the NBA championship during the 2020-21 season as the starting center. Other than being a one-time NBA champion, Lopez is also a one-time NBA All-Star and a one-time member of the NBA All-Defensive First Team.
The 36-year-old is an elite rim protector, and he can stretch the floor with his three-point shot, which was virtually non-existent at the beginning of his NBA career.
While adding a guy like Brook Lopez sounds good for the San Antonio Spurs, it depends on what they will need to give up to get him. If the Milwaukee Bucks have a huge asking price, then it might not be the best idea for them to get the 16-year veteran.
