San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama recently appeared in an interview with Sports Illustrated, where he shared one of the biggest surprises he had since joining the NBA. The Frenchman said he lost his admiration for some of the players who previously inspired him due to their lack of perceived commitment (while not naming anyone in particular).

“How, in a good way, some of them are really impressive and inspiring in the way they approach the game every night, but others that I used to like and now it’s like, nah, I’m not sure that they deserve it. They don’t seem like they put in as much work as I thought,” Wembanyama explained.
“Like I said, some of the guys I’ve been watching growing up, I’m not disappointed, but I’m like, ‘Ugh, that’s it?'” he added.

Victor Wembanyama is coming off a spectacular rookie campaign in which he was unanimously selected as NBA Rookie of the Year while placing second in the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award behind Minnesota Timberwolves’ Rudy Gobert.
While his physical advantages are obvious, his success is also a testament to his dedication and hard work. Because of his old-school mindset, Victor Wembanyama seems destined for greatness with the San Antonio Spurs.
San Antonio Spurs receives pessimistic playoff projection in 2024-25
The San Antonio Spurs aim to bounce back this upcoming season after a 22-60 record in 2023-24. With the arrivals of Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, they should improve their win-loss record, but not enough to make it back to the playoffs.

According to ESPN Analytics, the San Antonio Spurs have a one percent chance of making the postseason, which should motivate Wembanyama and co. this year.
