Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham got praise and recognition from one of her teammates for her “sacrifices” in making their current lineup work, with a lot of their biggest stars sidelined due to injury.

In a post-game interview, Fever shooting guard Lexie Hull took teammates Sophie Cunningham and Kelsey Mitchel to center stage as she credited the two for carrying the weight of challenges the Fever had been facing recently. In her piece, Hull highlighted how the two made “Sacrifices” for the team in recent games.

“Her and Sophie, putting themselves before the team, making sure that they’re sacrificing, playing out of position, doing things that they don’t normally do,” Hull said. “Maybe uncomfortable, but I think they both really did a great job of sacrificing in those moments and doing what the team needed to do.”

Kelsey Mitchell was “unbelievably proud” and said “I think this is the most resilient team I’ve ever been a part of.”

Lexie Hull made a point to shout-out Mitchell and Cunningham for sacrificing by playing out of position, and excelling.

In a rout of the Chicago Sky, 92–70, the Indiana Fever showed their strength despite missing several stars, including rookie Caitlin Clark, veteran guard Sydney Colson, and defensive specialist Aari McDonald. Clark has now missed ten straight games and is out with a right groin injury, while Colson and McDonald were recently diagnosed with leg injuries and are out for the year.

The Indiana Fever relied on their depth during their Sunday game. Lexie Hull, Kelsey Mitchell, and Sophie Cunningham were each cast in unusual roles to help fill the gaps created by their missing teammates.

Hull had a season-high 17 points on four triples, and alongside Mitchell and Cunningham, combined for 42 points and ten assists while being out of position to help the team through the injuries to other players.

Sophie Cunningham Embraces “Point God” Nickname

Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham earned herself a playful new moniker Saturday night after steering the team to a dominant 92–70 victory over the Chicago Sky. With star rookie Caitlin Clark and backup guards Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald sidelined, Cunningham stepped into the starting point guard role and delivered with poise—posting 16 points, three rebounds, and two assists in just 28 minutes.

Her steady command of the offense helped Indiana complete a 4–0 sweep of Chicago in their season series, prompting a tunnel celebration where Cunningham grinned into the camera and declared, “That’s a big dub baby. Point God.”

The nickname, traditionally reserved for elite playmakers, marked a tongue-in-cheek nod to Cunningham’s unexpected floor general duties. Known more for her off-ball shooting and defensive grit, the veteran has stepped up amid Indiana’s guard shortage, seamlessly adjusting to new responsibilities.

So far this season, Sophie Cunningham is averaging 8.7 points per game, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.0 assists.
