Sophie Cunningham has never been shy about where her loyalties stand, and with the Border War looming, she made sure everyone knew her feelings about Kansas.

“God, I love that s**t,” Cunningham said. “If my knee was good, I’d be jumping around this freaking apartment right now. I’m so pumped for the Border War. God, I hate Kansas. I hate them. I hate them. But inject Mr. Brightside into my damn veins. Oh my God, I’m so hyped.”
The Border War between Missouri and Kansas has always carried a unique weight, and Sophie Cunningham has been one of its loudest supporters. Even while sidelined with injury, she still found energy to pour into her alma mater.
“I’m so glad they’re bringing it (Border War) back because at the end of the day, it just brings back like just good memories for everyone,” Cunningham said. “I love a good Border War, and they always get out of hand, and I get that. But I hate Kansas.”
Her comments highlight just how deep rivalries can run, especially for athletes who once lived through them on the court. Sophie Cunningham may be working her way back from injury with the Fever, but when it comes to Missouri basketball, her fire hasn’t cooled one bit.
Sophie Cunningham’s first season with the Fever Mauled by Injuries
Sophie Cunningham’s time with the Indiana Fever was cut short by injury, and the setback left her frustrated about not being able to contribute in her first season with the team.
Her struggles echoed those of star teammate Caitlin Clark, who also saw her campaign interrupted. “I had hoped to share a better update, but I will not be returning to play this season,” Clark announced on social media. “I spent hours in the gym every day with the singular goal of getting back out there. Disappointed isn’t a big enough word to describe how I am feeling.”

For Cunningham, it was another reminder that professional basketball can be cruel. Known for her toughness and relentless style, Sophie Cunningham isn’t just a role player — she is expected to provide leadership and edge. Missing time hurt both her development and the Fever’s chemistry on the floor.
Getting injured, falling off your form, and whatever roadblock gets in front of you. All of that is part and parcel of being a top-league player. Sophie Cunningham knows this all too well that occupational hazard comes with the occupation. But her will to come back stronger and better than ever is a factor looking to overcome this. Even if it takes the next season.
