South Carolina Gamecocks forward Ashlyn Watkins faced a devastating setback when she suffered a torn ACL during a game against Mississippi State. This injury ended her season, significantly impacting the team’s hopes as they aimed to defend their national championship.

The team confirmed that Watkins tore her ACL, an injury that would sideline her for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. This news came as a significant blow not only to Watkins but also to the Gamecocks, who were aiming to defend their national championship title.

Watkins had been an essential part of the Gamecocks’ success, averaging 7.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game in her appearances. Her presence on the court was felt deeply, particularly as she led the team in blocks and contributed significantly to their defensive strategy. The injury occurred in the second quarter, when she fell and required assistance from trainers, ultimately leaving the game without putting weight on her injured leg.

In the wake of her injury, Coach Dawn Staley faced the challenge of reorganizing the team’s lineup. With Watkins out, the Gamecocks needed to rely on other players to step up. Chloe Kitts and Sania Feagin were expected to increase their playing time, while freshman Joyce Edwards emerged as a crucial reserve. Each player would need to adapt to the new roles and responsibilities in the frontcourt to maintain the team’s competitive edge.

Watkins’ unfortunate accident will cause her to miss the season. This is detailed more in a tweet shared by ESPNW on Instagram.

Watkins’s absence also opened the door for players like Maryam Dauda and Adhel Tac, who had previously been limited in their playing time due to the team’s depth. Both players had the opportunity to showcase their skills and contribute to the Gamecocks’ success in crucial upcoming games against ranked opponents. The team’s depth would be tested, but the coaching staff remained optimistic about the adjustments.

As South Carolina prepares for their next games, including challenging matchups against Texas A&M and other top-ranked teams, the focus has shifted to resilience and teamwork. The Gamecocks aims to rally together in support of Watkins, demonstrating their commitment to overcoming the adversity presented by her injury.
