Steph Curry explains why he chose not to partner with Nike for his ‘Curry Brand,’ opting for Under Armour—a less recognizable brand during their 2013 partnership. As Curry became one of the most popular players in the NBA, his shoe line with UA grew and eventually became their spotlight.
At the start of his NBA legacy, Curry faced a pivotal choice between Nike and Under Armour, both eager to sponsor him. While the former, with its history of partnerships with NBA legends, seemed like the obvious choice, the Golden State Warriors guard decided to gamble on the latter.
In his interview with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang, Steph Curry elaborated on how Under Armour provided him greater opportunities to grow his shoe line without competing against other star athletes on their roster.

“There’s a reason I’m not [with Nike]. I’ve always been an underdog. It’s kind of my mentality. When I joined Under Armour back in 2013, the basketball roster was pretty slim and basically starting the category from scratch. So to be the signature athlete for the seven to eight years that I was there, to then turning into a Curry Brand, and the success that we’ve had, I’m super proud of that to be honest,” Curry said.

The former Davidson Wildcats also compared how he chose Under Armour to how Michael Jordan chose Nike, coming with his own “Air Jordan” trademark. By solidifying his shoe line under UA, Curry desires to compete with Jordan’s shoes, particularly regarding their cultural impact.
“My version of [Air Jordan], in the sense of he set the standard and then everybody’s in the comparison game of his career, on the court, and obviously what Air Jordan means culturally, on the court as well.”
“But what [Curry Brand] learned over the last four years, doing what we do great and understand this is a marathon,” Curry added.
Steph Curry has many products with Under Armour. Some of his most notable are his trademark shoes, and even his apparel captivates many.

“I just love his competitive nature. Like he has, he’s got that dawg in him. You can kind of tell, he doesn’t talk that much, but he’s very animated. I’ve never not seen him in the moment like trying to rip your head off type vibes. So I like that,” Curry said.
