Seattle Storm co-owner Sue Bird broke silence on the topic of the Seattle Storm’s recent woes, as her team faced allegations of bullying and harassment, and one of their players asking out of the team.
In one of the recent episodes of her “A Touch More” podcast with Megan Rapinoe, Bird touched on the issue, particularly the supposed “aftermath” to the Seattle Storm, since no one from their team got drafted for the WNBA’s newest extensions team, the Golden State Valkyries.
In her statement, Bird highlighted how the fact no one from the Storm was picked is not proof of the issue affecting the team, but rather a simple fact of them just not getting picked.
“Nobody from the Storm got picked. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say they protected Jewell, Skylar, Ezi, Gabby, Jordan, and Nneka,” Bird said. “Mercedes Russell, Sammy Wickham, Victoria Vivians, and Joiner Holmes. All of these players are unrestricted free agents. I don’t view this as a slap in the face to Sades, Sammy, Vivians, or Joiner at all, it’s just, ‘Oh we chose Monique Billings for this.”
Sue Bird Discusses Seattle Storm Bullying Allegations
In the past weeks, the Seattle Storm, where Sue Bird is co-owner, has been plagued with issues of alleged bullying from the coaching staff. The tension further heated up when Storm shooting guard Jewell Loyd publicly asked for a trade.
Naturally, fans would wonder if people on the higher-ups like Bird would know and be able to share more about the issue. However, as it turned out, Bird only knows whatever information is public.
“We see it,” Bird said, talking about the Seattle Storm news that has gone public in the past several weeks. “We see you guys in our comments, wanting us to talk about it, but I think we’re just gonna keep it real.”
“I am a part of ownership, so there are just things that, at times, legally, I can’t speak on,” she added. “Basically what you’ve been seeing online or reading is exactly what we have known. But as an owner, I did want to have that investigation finished, did want to let the dust settle in a way before speaking on it publicly.”
While Jewell Loyd had requested for a trade off of the Seattle Storm, Sue Bird did not provide any detail if any potential deals are in the works right now.
