LeBron James is finally doing something that suggests he is getting very close to his retirement.

James will wear a special-edition patch on his jersey to celebrate his record-setting 23rd NBA season, beginning tonight in Sacramento, the city where he made his NBA debut in 2003.
At 41 years old, posting career-low numbers, and fresh off missing a number of games with sciatica, his custom patch feels less like a milestone celebration and more like a farewell tour billboard.
Folks, instead of getting hyped, torched the move as vintage LeBron self-promotion, the kind that writes its own legacy before the final buzzer sounds.
LeBron James Debuts Epic 23rd Season Jersey Patch in Sacramento Return
Lakers King has had one of the best, if not the best, careers in the league. Many things last season could have been the end of his career, but he shut down the retirement talks and is averaging 21.9 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 6.9 assists this year.
Given that, Lakers’ King is set to wear the custom-made special jersey patch to celebrate his historic record-setting 23rd NBA season. NBA chose Sacramento for the occasion because it holds special meaning for LeBron because on October 29, 2003, the then 18-year-old James dropped 25 points in his NBA debut against the Kings.

Nearly twenty-three years later, he returned to the same building to unveil the special-edition patch on his Lakers uniform to wear it for the remainder of the season. It features a silhouette of his pregame chalk toss and three colored stripes representing the franchises he’s played for in Cleveland, Miami, and L.A.

Fans sense the writing on the wall. He’s playing fine stretches, but Father Time is undefeated. Agent Rich Paul admitted last week that he doesn’t know when LeBron retires. That uncertainty, paired with a commemorative patch mid-season, fuels the retirement speculation following the patch announcement.
Fans Roast LeBron James’ “Arrogant” Jersey Patch as Retirement Smoke Signals
Social media reacted strongly, with responses ranging from confusion to outright criticism. The announcement unexpectedly became a debate over James’ brand management.
One fan wrote, “I thought he retired lol.”
Another added, “I can’t wait for this guy to be gone.”
A third shared, “Of course he is. Usually a player retires and THEN the league votes to do anything about a patch or ceremony in regards to your achievements. His arrogance has no boundaries.”
The fourth claimed, “Where he’s copying the Jordan chalk toss.”
A fifth added, “Corny as f—-.”
For critics, it’s classic James — inserting himself into history before history finishes the job, but not in the fashion of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan.
However, it is also a fact that no player has ever reached a 23rd season before James. So, whether the patch is premature self-mythologizing or well-deserved recognition depends on who you ask.
