The Los Angeles Clippers recently faced disappointing news when they had to part ways with James Harden. However, the move ultimately brought a major return, as the franchise acquired Darius Garland from the Cleveland Cavaliers in a blockbuster trade that sent Harden to Cleveland.
Remarkably, just one day after the deal, the Cavaliers and Clippers were already scheduled to face each other on the court. The game turned into a stunning result as Cleveland dominated the game and secured a 124-91 victory.
Following the game, Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue opened up about his vision for Garland. Lue revealed that he sees similarities between the young guard and the Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving, particularly in how he plans to utilize him offensively.

“That’s what I told him,” Lue said. “He went back and watched a whole bunch of film from those days. We’re gonna put the ball in his hands, he’s got to be able to make plays for himself and his teammates. He has the ability to do that.”
“He really could help us. He’s different from James, we can play different, faster paced, playing him off the ball more. It’s going to be exciting. I’m happy for both sides.”
Garland’s tenure in Cleveland was marked by flashes of brilliance but also hampered by injuries and inconsistency. This season was no different, as he had been sidelined since January 14. It appears the Cavaliers ultimately decided it was time to move in a new direction.
From Garland’s perspective, the trade presents an opportunity for a fresh start and perhaps a chance to step out of Donovan Mitchell’s shadow. Across 26 regular-season games this season Garland averaged 18.0 points, 6.9 assists, and 2.4 rebounds per contest.
Clippers GM Lawrence Frank Excited About Darius Garland’s Arrival
Garland is now expected to form a strong partnership with Kawhi Leonard as the Clippers continue reshaping their roster. After finalizing the acquisition, Clippers general manager Lawrence Frank shared his optimism about what the two-time All-Star brings to the franchise.
“We are trying to get younger while continuing to win, and Darius allows us to do both,” Frank said “He is a two-time All-Star who just turned 26 and a highly skilled point guard with excellent feel. Darius is an adept shooter and passer, a quick decision-maker and a respected teammate who has shown the ability to run an elite offense. We
are excited to win with him and grow with him.”
Garland was originally selected by the Cavaliers in the 2019 NBA Draft. After seven seasons with the franchise, he now heads to the second stop of his NBA career. The move also carries historical significance, as Winston Garland and Darius Garland become just the second father-son duo to play for the Clippers, following Doc Rivers and Austin Rivers.
