Warriors Star on Steve Kerr’s Coaching Style: “He Coaches Steph Curry Really, Really, Really Hard”

With the way that Steph Curry has played in his career, many would assume that head coach Steve Kerr lets him get away with the things he does on the court. However, it’s the opposite. Based on what Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green said recently, Curry is being coached like the rest of the Warriors roster and doesn’t get special treatment like a star.

When he’s on the court, Curry plays freely and loves to toy with the defenses with his mastery of the ball. But he often commits mistakes. Turning the ball over, failing to rotate on defense and sometimes missing some shots. From a fan’s perspective, it doesn’t look like Kerr is hard on the four-time champion with the mistakes he usually makes.

However, Green confirmed that the head coach is showing his authority as the team’s leader by actually coaching Curry and correcting his mistakes.

“Most people think Steph can do what he wants,” Green said. “No. He’s on Steph’s ass all the time. Defense, turnovers. He coaches Steph really, really, really hard. I don’t think people realize that.”

In fact, it was Curry who asked Steve Kerr to establish his authority in the team and not give him a different kind of treatment. The two-time MVP wants his teammates to see that even though he’s the star of the team, that doesn’t mean he can’t be coached.

“He actually probably gets on me more now than ever,” Curry said. “The one conversation we’ve had is to coach me like you would coach everybody because that’ll help strengthen your voice in the locker room, create that trust.”

Steve Kerr and Steph Curry have worked together since 2014 and have won four titles together. With the longevity that they’ve been together, they know each other very well and have created an unbreakable bond.

When the question about the idea of Curry playing for any coach other than Kerr was brought up, the Warriors star dismissed the hypothetical probe. According to the 11-time All-Star, he can’t see himself being with a different coach.

“I don’t want to,” Curry said. “We deserve that, I feel. Things change in this league. We can only control so much. But I think we’re in a very unique situation that we deserve the opportunity [to ride it out].”

Kerr has one year left in his two-year, $35 million contract with the Warriors.
