The WNBA is doing everything to become as popular as its male counterpart. While they don’t have as much history as the men’s side of the game, they are slowly gaining star power that will build the foundations of a thriving professional sports league.
As a part of their efforts to make the league more entertaining to casual sports fans, the league is announcing changes to its All-Star weekend, which is set to happen in Phoenix in July.
WNBA to implement changes to their yearly All-Star Game
The Spun’s Tzvi Machlin writes about the massive change it will have for this year’s All-Star. In his report, it seems that the game is going to be special as it is set to become a warm-up for the upcoming Olympics:
According to Richard Deitsch of The Athletic, the next WNBA All-Star Game will feature a game pitting the USA Basketball Women’s National Team players in the WNBA versus a team of remaining WNBA All-Star players. The game is slated for July 20.
Team USA will be participating in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris this summer. They will be pursuing their eighth straight gold medal in the Summer Olympics.
While the men’s team has faced increasingly stiff competition during the past couple of international tournaments, the women will face a different kind of pressure ahead of their Olympic foray.
Such an uninterrupted streak of dominance is bound to end someday, and the pros who will play in the Olympics do not want to become immortalized as the team that ended the era of unbridled dominance their predecessors set.
While the 2024 season is yet to start, it will be interesting to see how this game will play out.
