Even she endured a challenging detention in Russia several years ago, Phoenix Mercury center Brittney Griner still took the chance to play for Team USA in the Olympics. As such, the WNBA star shared her true thoughts about playing for the United States this time around.

Griner was detained at a Russian airport on February 17, 2022, as she arrived in the country to play for her Russian team. Officials claimed that her luggage contained vape cartridges with cannabis oil, a drug that was illegal in Russia. This incident occurred just a week before Russia invaded Ukraine, leading many to believe that her detainment was politically motivated.

The WNBA star’s case gained widespread attention, and demands grew for her release. However, some were concerned that the media coverage could make her more valuable as a diplomatic hostage. Her trial began in July 2022, and she pled guilty, stating that the cannabis oil had been packed accidentally. Her lawyers later argued that she had a medical prescription for the drug and that she was forced to sign documents in Russian that she did not understand.

On August 4, 2022, the WNBA center was found guilty of smuggling illegal drugs and sentenced to 9 years in prison. The verdict was seen as a geopolitical showdown, with the United States government working to secure her release through diplomatic channels. Griner’s ordeal has drawn international attention and raised questions about the intersection of sports, politics, and international relations.

Years after her release and Grinner has made her way back to the league and playing for Team USA. In an article written by Dan Wetzel for Yahoo Sports, the Phoenix Mercury star shared her true feelings playing for Team USA in the Paris Olympics.

“It’s always meant everything to me,” Griner said. “My dad, a Marine, 1968-69. For us, for me to represent my country, it means everything to him and to me. Before basketball, I wanted to be in our military, actually. Now to be able to put [the Team USA jersey] on, to be honored to be picked again amongst so many amazing women, and be here a third time, I’m just really stoked.”

Grinner is one of the WNBA stars included in Team USA’s roster for the Olympics women’s basketball tournament. Among those who joined the lineup are New York Liberty’s Sabrina Ionescu, Phoenix Mercury’s Diana Taurasi, and Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson, among others.

With Grinner in the lineup, Team USA has a stronger chance of winning the gold in Paris. Of course, her motivation to play for the United States after enduring so much hardships in Russia will only make the WNBA star more focused on the goal.
