NBA fans have been waiting for Zion Williamson to do the Slam Dunk Contest since he was drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans in 2019. However, injuries have prevented the star forward from showcasing his aerial talent on the big stage. Now that he’s been somewhat healthy, former star Carmelo Anthony urged him to participate in this year’s contest.
Anthony believes it’s time for Williamson to be a participant in the event. When discussing which players he would like to see in the contest on Tuesday’s episode of NBA on NBC’s “NBA Showtime,” the New York Knicks icon pointed out that it’s time for him to reignite his fame.
“Zion Williamson,” Anthony said. “Zion, this is your time to come back and put yourself back where everybody wanted you to be at.

“You should be in the Slam Dunk Contest… You had your following since high school, middle school. Get that following back. Get these kids to look at Zion Williamson again.”
Anthony added that it could be the perfect opportunity for Williamson to sell his brand and regain his status as a star in the league. Former star Tracy McGrady added that it could encourage other stars like Ja Morant to join the contest.
A Zion Williamson trade is unlikely to happen this season

Zion Williamson has been the subject of trade rumors over the past few seasons. His injuries have affected his value and future with the Pelicans. However, his situation with New Orleans is different this season. Based on The Athletic’s Sam Amick, there’s a slim chance that a deal involving Williamson could happen.
Amick gave the update on his appearance on Tuesday’s FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back.”
“There’s not much talk on Zion getting traded at this point. It’s a little bit quiet, though a possibility, I think. Joe Dumars told teams he wanted to really get a good look at Zion, and I don’t know how long that look needs to be before he makes up his mind,” Amick said.
The former Duke star has appeared in 21 games this season, averaging 22.8 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Although he’s missed a few games, Williamson has remained available for the Pelicans.
