Victor Wembanyama looked every bit like the star San Antonio’s been waiting on. However, some NBA fans are not ready to jump aboard just yet.
In the Spurs’ preseason run against the Pacers, the 7-foot-6 phenom came out moving different — confident, sharp, and clearly out to remind people what he can do when healthy. You could tell he’s put in work.

By halftime, Hoop Central threw his line up on X: 19 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals. Looked like vintage Wemby stuff. But scroll through the replies and it’s a mix of jokes and eye rolls.
One fan cracked, “Stat padding against ‘Jay Huff.’”
6 turnovers against “jay huff” 😂

Another added, “tbf if I was 7’6 being defended by Jay Huff I would do the same.”
A third piled on, “Forgot 6 turnovers.”
He ended the night with 27 points and 11 boards in just 25 minutes, helping the Spurs snag the win. Even so, a lot of folks brushed it off as just preseason fluff.
“Oh we’re about to have a good season” — NBA fans see signs of hope
Not everyone was throwing shade, though. Spurs fans saw something real in that performance.

Another said, “Fingers crossed he and the rest can stay healthy.”
And a third joked, “I’m just glad I got to see my team have success before this alien landed.”
Wemby himself looked stronger, steadier — less hesitation, more presence. He wasn’t just blocking or spacing out; he was bullying guys inside, looking a lot like early-2000s Shaq with wingspan.

The 20-year-old spent a chunk of the offseason rehabbing from deep vein thrombosis, then trained with Hakeem Olajuwon to polish up his moves and touch. Between that and his added muscle, something’s clicking.
If this is how he’s easing into the season, the Spurs might finally be on the verge of something fun — and Wemby could be about to make that next big leap.
