The San Antonio Spurs were plagued by the injury bug after Shams Charania of ESPN disclosed that Victor Wembanyama would be sidelined for several weeks. Charania reported on Monday that Wembanyama is dealing with a left calf strain. It’s a significant blow to the Spurs as they won’t have their best player. With the Frenchman, the team had a hot start to the 2025-26 season and is now 9-4.
Wemby has a significant leap in his third year in the league. In 12 games, the 7-foot-4 big man has averaged 26.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, four assists and 3.6 blocks. Although it’s early in the year, the center has been the favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year.
Aside from Wemby, the Spurs are dealing with other injuries. They are without three point guards ahead of their contest against the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday. Reigning Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle, rookie guard Dylan Harper and Jordan McLaughlin are all listed as out.

Spurs supporters became concerned after learning about Victor Wembanyama from Charania. These are some of their comments regarding San Antonio’s most recent injury.
“Spurs better go get Tim Duncan out of retirement,” a fan said.
“Draymond really packed up Wemby 😔” another fan commented.
“Spurs realizing they can still tank for Boozer/Dybansta/Peterson,” one fan said.
“Dunked on Draymond so hard he strained his calf,” a fan commented.

“Spurs have to manage him carefully. No need to rush a unicorn back from a calf strain,” someone commented.
“Injuries like this remind you how valuable he is. The whole system shifts when he’s missing,” a comment read.
“We need to have a conversation about wemby being injury prone,” a fan pointed out.
Victor Wembanyama comments on his interaction with Draymond Green

On Friday, the Spurs lost to the Golden State Warriors 109-108. The one play that became viral was the alley-oop inbounds Victor Wembanyama got from Castle. During that sequence, Draymond Green was the defender assigned to the star big man. Wemby dunked the ball on Green, but the officials didn’t count the possession.
After the play, Wemby and Green talked trash to each other. The French star was asked about it after the game, and he said he needed to respond a certain way.
“I was not trying to prove anything to anybody, it’s just, at some point — just like anybody, if somebody speaks to you a certain way, you have to respond a certain way,” Wembanyama said. “That’s just how it is.”
Then, he was asked if he enjoyed it.
“Did I enjoy it? Good question. I don’t know, I’m not enjoying it now.”
The next contest between the two teams will be on Feb. 11 at Chase Center.
