Nico Harrison won’t be able to see his plans with the Dallas Mavericks come to fruition. On Tuesday, Dallas fired the executive and has assigned Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi as co-interim general managers. Harrison was behind the blockbuster trade that sent star guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. In the first full season of his experiment with Davis being the best player on the team, the Mavericks fell to a 3-8 record.
The trade has been the most criticized move by a front office. Fans have not moved on from seeing the star who led them in the Finals in 2024 get traded to the Lakers. There was a belief that he’d stay in Dallas for most of his career, like franchise legend Dirk Nowitzki.
Following the move, there were talks about the reason behind the Mavericks’ dreadful start. According to a Western Conference executive, one of the main reasons was that the team doesn’t have a leader. It’s a role that Luka Doncic had during his time with the organization.

A scout from the Eastern Conference ripped the team, saying that the Mavericks are forcing players out of their position. This pertains to head coach Jason Kidd’s strategy of putting Cooper Flagg at point guard.
“There’s no point guard. You don’t have a floor leader,” an anonymous scout said. “That’s the first problem. Then you’re trying to make a guy who isn’t a point guard a point guard.
The scout added that Kidd doesn’t trust D’Angelo Russell, the point guard whom Nico Harrison signed during the summer.
“The coach doesn’t trust the guy you signed this summer. That’s obvious. They don’t trust him enough to make him the floor leader, and that’s in line with the consensus around the league. They don’t have shooting, and they don’t have creation. Those are things you need to be a good offensive team.”
Mavericks owner expressed commitment to the franchise following the firing of Nico Harrison

After the Mavericks relieved Nico Harrison from his position, team owner Patrick Dumont penned a letter. The text of his letter reiterated the team’s focus on commitment to winning.
“No one associated with the Mavericks organization is happy with the start of what we all believed would be a promising season. You have high expectations for the Mavericks, and I share them with you. When the results don’t meet expectations, it’s my responsibility to act. I’ve made the decision to part ways with General Manager Nico Harrison,” Dumont wrote.
“I understand the profound impact these difficult last several months have had. Please know that I’m fully committed to the success of the Mavericks.”
The team’s next assignment following Harrison’s dismissal is to find a replacement.
