Heading into the 2025-26 NBA season, there are some questions about Kevin Durant‘s future with the Houston Rockets. Durant is in the final year of his four-year, $195 million deal he signed with the Brooklyn Nets. According to reports, KD is eligible to sign a two-year, $122 million contract extension. On Monday’s Media Day, the 15-time All-Star revealed his plans for his future in Houston.

Durant was traded to the Rockets by the Phoenix Suns over the summer. The team was the third seed in the Western Conference, but lost in the first round to the Golden State Warriors. Experts believe Houston is one star player away from being an actual contender, especially after Alperen Sengun emerged as an All-Star last year.

The only concern for the Rockets is Durant’s commitment to the team. Fortunately for the organization, the two-time NBA champion gave a major update on his looming contract situation.

“I do see myself signing a contract extension,” Durant said. “I can’t tell you exactly when that will happen, but I do see it happening. Just seeing the quick progression of this franchise, from where it was right after that James Harden-Chris Paul era, seeing when Ime (Udoka) got here and how he turned it around so fast.

“And I have some connections here within the organization, people I work with around the league already, so it felt organic and natural coming into the gym and being a Houston Rocket for the first time.”

Kevin Durant brings leadership and experience to the young Rockets team. He will also serve as the team’s go-to scorer, after Jalen Green was part of the deal involving the Suns. Lastly, Durant is reunited with his former Nets coach, Ime Udoka, who was an assistant back then.

Before he was traded by the Suns, he made it known that he wanted to join the Rockets. He packed up and left for Houston when Phoenix granted his desire. Speaking to the media, Kevin Durant disclosed that he chose the Texas squad because of his rapport and comfort level with Udoka.

“I just thought about who I was comfortable with, which coaching staff would just let me be me and understand what I bring to the table,” Durant said. “Ime [Udoka] has always been one of those guys that understood my mentality and approach to the game. He always respected that and gave me my space to be me.”

Durant and Udoka attempted to guide the Brooklyn Nets to an NBA championship while they were together. However, injuries and chemistry issues became one of their major problems.

The coach joined the Boston Celtics as a head coach, while Kevin Durant was dealt to the Suns.
