Will Nikola Jokic Leave Denver Nuggets? 3-Time MVP Explains Why New Contract is Not That Important Right Now

The 2027 free agency is going to be one of the craziest ever with a number of star players entering it without a live contract. One of them is Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic.

The Serbian center will surely have lot of suitors once his contracts expires. Among the names emerging are the Golden State Warriors who are already working to move parts to accommodate what is expected to be among the biggest contract in NBA history.

Is there a reason for the Nuggets to not renew him? The front office probably does not have any but this league has seen the most shocking trade recently. Jokic will have the last say.

He’s won almost everything there is to win wearing the Nuggets jersey. He is already a three-time MVP, a Finals MVP, and an NBA title winner.

They won the championship in 2023 although they failed in the last two. It’s hard to say though that they were not competitive in the last two seasons as they exited both in the second round, both in seven games.

Nikola Jokic is focused on current season

The 2027 free agency is still two years away and Jokic is not thinking about the free agency yet. Instead, he wants to spend his energy on the current season.

He is aware of the new contract he can receive but he believes he has to earn it. He also declared that he wants to be a Nugget forever.

“I don’t think about it. Those contract extensions come as a reward, as something natural to the sport, especially in today’s NBA, how you see the salary cap is goin,” he told reporters.

“My plan is to be Nuggets forever. So that’s my answer.”

He alone can’t win the title. Does he think he is surrounded with the players he needs to go all the way? Jokic is has faith on his teammates. He is particularly bullish with their summer signings like Bruce Brown, Cameron Johnson, and Jonas Valanciunas.

“Bruce is back. We won with him. Need to save his career again,” the Joker said jokingly.

“We have Cam and Jonas — we have a bunch of new guys. We have Holmes healthy. We’ll see. It’s a new energy, new beginning for us. Hopefully, we can do something.”
