New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu has no intentions of leaving New York and playing for another team, even if it means going to her hometown franchise. At least, according to information revealed by one NBA insider.

In a recent episode of NBA Today, insider Marc Spears spilled the tea on the future of Sabrina Ionescu, who would enter unrestricted free agency following the 2025 season. According to him, the Liberty star is determined to continue and finish her career with New York.

“I talked to her dad during the WNBA All-Star weekend,” Spears said on NBA Today. “He said she’s never coming back home. She’s gonna play in New York her whole career.”

With the Liberty getting blown out, here’s an interesting tidbit from Marc Spears on Sabrina Ionescu:

Sabrina Ionescu was born and raised in Walnut Creek, California—part of the San Francisco Bay Area that’s nicknamed the Golden State. She attended Miramonte High School in nearby Orinda, where she became one of the top recruits nationally before heading west to play at the University of Oregon.

Sabrina Ionescu Speaks Out Following Loss to Wings

New York Liberty star Sabrina Ionescu stepped up as a leader of the team, following a humiliating loss in their recent game against the Dallas Wings. After a team meeting, Ionesuice shared pointers for improvements they discussed.

“Just understanding the urgency we need to play with, understanding nobody feels bad for us down some people,” Ionescu said in the postgame team meeting. “We have to come out with a little more purpose. They brought JJ up into PNRs, and we had nobody to contest at the rim. Usually, we have Stewie.”

Breanna Stewart was ruled out of New York’s blowout loss to the Dallas Wings after aggravating an injury that limited her to just three minutes in Saturday’s game against the Los Angeles Sparks. The two-time WNBA Finals MVP suffered a lower-body issue early in that contest and was held out as the team opted for a cautious approach to her recovery.

With Breanna Stewart absent, New York’s defense was not up to the challenge of stopping Dallas’ pick-and-roll game, and the Wings were able to run out to a 63–36 lead at the half. New York came out strong in the third quarter, and it outscored Dallas by double digits, but the lack of a strong start was too difficult to overcome, and they could never catch up.

Sabrina Ionescu was New York’s only consistent presence and had the ball in her hands for most of the playmaking, while also leading the team in scoring as they made a run. She was attacking the rim, she was running the offense, but despite all of that, it was easy to see how much the Liberty missed Stewart’s presence as a rim protector.
