NBA fans noted how Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo joked about how he got a black eye after they lost to the Sacramento Kings, by explaining to reporters that the injury was earned while he was heroically participating in a grocery store that had a purse snatcher, and after assisting the victim, he went home and rested.

The tall tale came during a postgame interview, where Giannis spun the fictional rescue with comic detail. In an interview with the media, the Bucks star said he subdued the thief, returned the purse, paid for the woman’s groceries, and watched police take the suspect away.

“Actually I was in Pick ‘n Save, right?” he said. “So while I was checking out my groceries, there was this guy that was about to snatch a purse from a lady. So I was like hey man, what are you doing? Stop. So I went and grabbed him and he kind of turned and elbowed me in the eye but then I grabbed him, put him on the floor, took the purse, gave it to the lady, and then the lady was safe.”

Turns out, he saved a lady from getting robbed while shopping at the store. What a legend.pic.twitter.com/PDzxnvZK3B https://t.co/Bd9raQBnbQ

One fan responded to the news from X, and questioned how an elbow could reach someone as tall as the Bucks star.

“How can a guy get their elbow that high? Lol,” the fan said.

“Why would he be standing straight up in this exchange,” another fan added. “Typically when you start tussling with somebody, you naturally lower your weight.”

In reality, Giannis’ bruise resulted from physical play against the Kings, including several hard falls and a rough possession battle with Russell Westbrook, though he still managed a 26-point double-double in the loss

The lighthearted anecdote drew laughs and underscored Giannis’ ability to defuse attention from an injury while the Bucks regroup for upcoming road games, including a matchup with the Indiana Pacers. He is known for his sense of humor in interviews and on social media, often telling jokes and funny stories that, while fans know to be obviously not true, but are still funny nonetheless.

NBA Fans Joke About Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Black Eye

Over at X, NBA fans have been talking about how Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has become so good at telling joke stories that they sometimes almost sound too real.

“I can’t even tell if he’s serious or joking lol,” one fan said.

For one fan, the most unbelievable part is not Giannis beating up a purse snatcher and getting elbowed, but something else entirely.

“Giannis still doing his own shopping is the most surprising part,” they said.

For the most part, NBA fans are amused at how Giannis has managed situations like on-court injuries with his humorous storytelling skills.
